Power of the Pen

The SJS Power of the Pen team, coached by Mrs. Jessica Jones and Mrs. Molly Lindsley, competed at Timberstone Junior High School, Saturday, January 14.

One of our students placed first for an alternate paper, two eighth grade students placed 12th and 13th overall, and the eighth grade team placed 2nd out of all of the teams!

The Regional Competition is held at Lourdes University in March.  We are hoping that many of our team members advance!

Congratulations to all of the writers!

There is no doubt about it; St. Joseph School produces some of the best student writers in Ohio!  Power of the Pen (POP), a statewide 7th and 8th grade essay-writing competition, is also an extracurricular academic program that has great success at SJS.  This year's group of exceptional writers head to state competition in late May.  The following excerpts are taken from poems written by students who are advancing to finals and may be read in their entirety by clicking the attachments below.

Horses

By Jayna Lonsway, Grade 7

Horses! Horses! Galloping by

leaping up into the sky

What kind of person could not defy

the thunder of their hooves nearby...

Pure Gold

By Kathryn Riddle, Grade 7

From the yellow

velvet ears,

with the crimped fur.

To the amber eyes,

with specks of hazel ...

It Is Quite Strange

By Anna Haudrich, Grade 8

It is quite strange

How happiness and time collide.

Years may go by,

But the memories stay in tact...

Writing practices begin the first week of the second quarter.  All interested writers are welcome!   Practices are after school from 2:30- 3:30 pm and occasionally over the lunch period.  Students who participate on St. Joseph Sylvania's POP team must be available to commit to three writing competitions in the winter and spring.  The district competition is after the first of the year and is local.  The regional competition is in March and is held at Lourdes University.  The State competition is held the Friday before Memorial weekend at Wooster College each year.  With each competition, students advance or are eliminated from future competition based on essay scores.  At competition, students write in three rounds and have 40 minutes per round.  Essays are judged by trained holistic writing judges.  Each year a team of twelve students start at the district level.  Many go on to compete at a regional competition and even a state level.  In fact in recent years, a record number of students have been awarded at state level!  Even more impressive, St. Joseph essays have been selected as “Best of Rounds,” the highest award given in the competition.   For more information, contact the middle school office.
